What to Stop Taking Before Rhinoplasty: Medications, Supplements & Timeline | KOWON

Which medications and supplements to stop before rhinoplasty — aspirin, fish oil, vitamin E, herbal supplements

— and the one rule that overrides everything: never stop prescription medication without medical guidance.

What to Stop Taking Before Rhinoplasty (And What You Must Never Stop on Your Own)

Overview infographic of medication and supplement categories to stop before rhinoplasty

**Please read first:** This article is general information, not personal medical advice.

Every patient receives an individualized stop-list and timeline from our team during consultation — that instruction always overrides this page.

And one rule stands above everything here: **if a doctor prescribed it, do not stop it on your own.

** Prescription blood thinners, heart medication, psychiatric medication and others may be dangerous to pause without medical supervision — tell us what you take,

and we coordinate the plan safely, with your prescribing doctor when needed.

Why We Ask You to Stop Certain Things Before Rhinoplasty

Almost everything on the rhinoplasty stop-list is there for one reason: bleeding.

Substances that thin the blood or interfere with clotting make a nose job messier, bruising heavier, and swelling worse

— which affects both your safety and your final result.

The second reason is healing: some substances (nicotine above all) constrict the small blood vessels your tissue needs for rhinoplasty recovery.

Nothing on the list is arbitrary; and honesty about what you take matters more than a perfect record.

We have never once been upset that a patient told us about a forgotten supplement — only grateful.

The Rhinoplasty Stop List, Category by Category

1. Blood-thinning painkillers (over-the-counter). Aspirin and NSAID painkillers such as ibuprofen and naproxen affect clotting.

These are typically paused for a period before your rhinoplasty on the timeline we give you individually

If you need pain relief in the run-up (headache, period pain), ask us which alternative is acceptable — there usually is one — rather than guessing.

(Prescription blood thinners like coumadin/warfarin are on our official stop list too — but they belong to category 5 below: never paused without a coordinated plan.)

2. Supplements and vitamins — all of them.

The usual suspects that surprise patients: fish oil / omega-3, vitamin E (high-dose), garlic supplements, ginkgo biloba, ginseng

— all associated with bleeding tendency.

And per KOWON's official pre-surgery advisory, the rule goes further than most clinics':

daily vitamins, including ordinary vitamin supplements, also stop before surgery.

"It's natural" does not mean "it's neutral in rhinoplasty." List everything for us and we'll set the stop timing for each.

3. Herbal and oriental medicine. Traditional herbal medicine (including Korean/Chinese oriental medicine — explicitly on our official stop list),

concentrated herbal extracts, and some medicinal teas can affect clotting or interact with sedation.

If you take anything in this category — from any tradition — tell us the name and we'll check it.

4. Smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, and alcohol — stop at least one week before surgery.

That one-week minimum is our official advisory, and earlier is better.

Nicotine in any form (cigarettes, vapes, chewing tobacco, patches, gum) constricts blood vessels and measurably worsens nose job healing.

Alcohol thins blood and interacts with sedation; it stops a week before your rhinoplasty and stays off through early recovery.

5. Prescription medication — the "ask first" category. Our official advisory names several that surprise patients:

contraceptive (birth control) pills, acne medications, and diet / weight-loss medications all stop before rhinoplasty

— and prescribed anticoagulants like coumadin need a coordinated pause, never a solo one.

ADHD medication, antidepressants, blood pressure and other hormonal medications each have their own rules

— some continue right through surgery day, some need coordinated adjustment.

None of them should be stopped by you unilaterally.

Tell us the full list at your video consultation; if needed, we coordinate with your prescribing doctor.

(Also note: some prescription drugs have Korean import rules — [see the packing guide]

How to Get Your Personal Rhinoplasty Timeline

The process is simple and happens during your [video consultation](/video-consultation/):

1.    Make the full list before the call — prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, herbal products, and nicotine/alcohol habits.

Photos of the labels work perfectly.

2.    We review it together and give you a written stop-and-restart timeline for each item.

3.    If a prescription needs adjusting, we coordinate the plan — involving your prescribing doctor where appropriate — well before your flight.

Something changed after the consultation? New medication, a course of antibiotics, anything — message us.

Updates take a minute; surprises on surgery day take longer

FAQ

Q1. What supplements should I stop before rhinoplasty?

Per KOWON's official advisory: fish oil/omega-3, vitamin E, ginkgo, ginseng, garlic supplements — and daily vitamins including ordinary vitamin supplements.

Your exact timeline is set individually at consultation.

Q2. Can I take painkillers before a nose job?

Aspirin and NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) are typically paused beforehand.

If you need pain relief in the days before your rhinoplasty, ask us which alternative is acceptable instead of choosing one yourself.

Q3. I take prescription medication — should I stop it before flying to Korea?

No — never stop prescription medication on your own. Tell us everything you take during your video consultation;

some medications continue through surgery, others need a coordinated plan with your prescribing doctor.

Q3-1. Do I have to stop birth control pills before rhinoplasty?

Yes — contraceptive pills are on our official pre-surgery stop list, along with acne and weight-loss medications.

Tell us what you take at your consultation and we'll set the stop-and-restart timing (and discuss what it means for you practically).

Q4. Do I really have to stop smoking and vaping before rhinoplasty?

Yes — at least one week before surgery per our official advisory (including chewing tobacco), and earlier is better.

Nicotine in any form constricts the blood vessels your nose job healing depends on.

Q5. I forgot and took something from the stop list — what now?

Tell us immediately and honestly. Depending on what and when, it may be fine, or we may adjust the schedule.

Honesty costs a message; concealment risks your safety.

The rhinoplasty stop-list looks long, but the action is short:

make your list, show us everything, follow the timeline we give you, and never make prescription decisions alone. That's the whole job.
