I feel a foreign body sensation 2 weeks after nose surgery — a pulling feeling when smiling and a sinking feeling

2024. 1. 22.

Why the columella and nostril center feel hard and a foreign body sensation appears when smiling at 2 weeks post-surgery, and how to view the nose feeling like it's sinking when walking. Also covers how excessive worry affects recovery.

Key points

  • Around 2 weeks post-surgery, a pulling feeling at the tip can occur — and it feeling stronger when speaking or smiling is also something that can happen.
  • A sinking feeling when walking or getting off a bus alone doesn't establish structural change — but if new symptoms appear after an actual impact, it gets checked.
  • If the operating hospital also said there's no problem, not paying excessive attention helps recovery.

"It's been about 2 weeks since my nose surgery. I had silicone on the bridge, ear cartilage on the tip, alar reduction, and even functional work. I like both the nose shape and the side view, but the foreign body sensation after rhinoplasty is uncomfortable, so I'm asking."

A question that came into KOWON Plastic Surgery. Specifically there were two. One was that the columella area supporting the nose and the center of the nostrils felt very hard, and a foreign body sensation was strongly felt when eating or making expressions — especially when smiling. She also said it was odd that only the left side felt it while the right was fine. The other was a feeling that the nose was sinking when impact hit the body, like walking or getting off a bus.

01

Why does the foreign body sensation worsen when smiling?

If about 2 weeks have passed since nose surgery, a pulling feeling at the tip can occur. Especially when speaking or smiling, the degree feeling a bit more severe is also something that can happen.

This kind of foreign body sensation can decrease during recovery, but natural disappearance can't be guaranteed. If it progressively worsens or comes with pain, redness, warmth, or shape change, inform the operating hospital.

02

What about the sinking feeling when impact is applied?

A sinking feeling when walking or getting off a bus alone can't establish structural change. Still, if new pain, bleeding, bending, or rapid swelling appeared after an actual impact, don't pass it off as a sensation issue — get it checked.

How the nose shape settles during recovery can be seen together in the before & after photos.

03

Is reducing worry also part of recovery?

If, after surgery, the degree excessively leads into worry, it can interfere with recovery.

If about 2 weeks have passed since nose surgery and the operating hospital also said there's no problem, there's no part that needs major worry. Not paying too much attention helps recovery.

04

Summary — sensations at the 2-week point are viewed as sensations

Foreign body sensation after rhinoplasty, a pulling feeling when smiling, a sinking feeling when impact is applied — all three are sensations that can be experienced at the 2-week point. If you like the shape and the operating hospital also said there's no problem, at this period it's better to give recovery time rather than holding onto each sensation and checking.

Still, if your mind isn't at ease, your current state can be checked in a 1:1 video consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions patients ask before a consultation.

When does the foreign body sensation after rhinoplasty go away?
It can decrease over time, but the disappearance point differs individually. If the pulling worsens or other symptoms accompany it, get it checked.
The sensation is only on one side — is that strange?
The degree felt can differ between left and right. If it's pulling at the 2-week point, it's viewed as a sensation that decreases over time.
The nose feels like it sinks whenever there's impact — did the surgery go wrong?
A feeling alone can't establish a surgical problem. If pain, bleeding, bending, or rapid swelling appeared after actual impact, the structure needs checking.

Responses to treatment and recovery progress vary by individual. Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.
