Gore-Tex implant — does it need replacing after 5 years? Rhinoplasty longevity and inflammation worries organized

2025. 7. 25.

It's been 5 years since surgery with ear cartilage on the tip and a Gore-Tex implant on the dorsum — is there really an expiry date? Why rhinoplasty doesn't need periodic redoing, the possibility of delayed inflammation, and why you shouldn't twist the nose to make it click — organized from the director's answers.

Key points

  • Gore-Tex implants don't have a uniform replacement cycle — a 5-year mark alone doesn't decide preventive replacement.
  • Delayed infection and skin-change possibilities aren't ruled out by duration alone — they're judged by symptoms and exam findings.
  • Grabbing the nose and twisting it side to side to make clicking sounds isn't good. Unless there's a particular reason, it's better not to deliberately make it click.

"I had surgery with ear cartilage on the tip and a Gore-Tex implant on the dorsum, and it's already almost 5 years. People say you have to replace it every 10 years, so I'm anxious."

The surgery itself passed without any problem, but there are cases where worry grows because of something read online. This article organizes the answer to an actual question worrying about the Gore-Tex implant's longevity and rhinoplasty inflammation.

01

What was the question?

It was a question from someone who had surgery using ear cartilage on the tip and a Gore-Tex implant on the dorsum, and had lived about 5 years without any problem. The starting point of the worry was stories heard around them — "you have to redo rhinoplasty every 10 years," "after 5 years they got rhinoplasty inflammation and had it removed." As the 5-year mark approached, anxiety grew.

On top of that, they asked three things together. Whether there really is such a thing as an expiry date — they'd blown their nose hard without particular care; whether Gore-Tex, which was widely used then, was discontinued because the material is dangerous, since lately surgeries seem to go back to silicone or other methods; and whether the clicking sound when grabbing the nose and twisting it slightly side to side (they said it doesn't hurt) relates to inflammation or future problems.

02

Does rhinoplasty have an expiry date?

Rhinoplasty implants aren't necessarily replaced just because a certain period has passed. Still, long-term maintenance possibility can't be guaranteed by a specific number of years either.

Of course, rhinoplasty inflammation is something that can occur anytime. Still, if it's not the early post-surgery period, the likelihood of inflammation isn't high. In other words, calculating risk by time alone — like "5 years passed so inflammation is due now" — is hard.

What's being worried aboutJudgment
Implants must be replaced after 5 or 10 yearsNo preventive replacement by period alone — judge by current state
Rhinoplasty inflammation appears over timeDon't rule out delayed problems by period alone — check symptoms
The clicking when twisting the nose should be checkedDeliberately twisting or making it click is itself not good

Which material is used in which state is judged differently per nose. The criteria for choosing materials can be seen in more detail in the rhinoplasty materials guide.

03

How about the habit of twisting the nose to make it click?

Grabbing the nose and twisting it side to side to make clicking sounds isn't good.

The more anxious you are, the more you check "is the state okay now" with your hand — but that checking itself irritates the nose. Unless there's a particular reason, don't twist the nose or deliberately make it click — if you live without worry, you can live for decades without problems.

04

Summary — look at state, not time

Gore-Tex implants don't have a set expiry date requiring mandatory replacement every few years. Conversely, delayed inflammation and skin changes can't be ruled out just because the early post-surgery period passed. Don't twist the nose to check — if changes like redness, pain, swelling, discharge, or skin thinning appear, get an examination.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions patients ask before a consultation.

Must a Gore-Tex implant be replaced after 5 or 10 years?
There's no need to redo it just because a certain period passed. Many people live over 20 years without problems after one surgery.
Does rhinoplasty inflammation appear over time?
Inflammation can occur anytime, but if it's not the early post-surgery period, the likelihood isn't high. The fact that 5 years passed isn't itself an inflammation signal.
The nose clicks when I twist it — is there a problem?
Rather than the sound itself, the act of deliberately twisting to make it click isn't good. Unless there's a particular reason, it's better not to twist the nose or make it click.
